Good morning, Lord
Three of the most powerful words for Christian spiritual growth.
Too often we rush into the day, get swamped by activities and can easily forget that God is there for us. Saying ‘Good morning Lord’ when we awaken or as we scramble out of bed is a great habit. These few words connect us with God right from the start of our day – in fact there is no better start to the day.
‘Good morning Lord’ is more than just a phrase however. These few words are incredibly powerful because:
- They open our minds and hearts to the power and gifts of God that are available for us in our lives today (wisdom, peace, happiness, understanding, etc.).
- They put us in a positive place as we start our day. We can begin by smiling and being happy – whatever challenges and difficulties are ahead. No more morning being grumpy!
- They facilitate the love of God to flow and for spiritual opportunities to emerge throughout the day.
- They place us in eternity. We are not just doing the mundane tasks of today but becoming connected with all that has gone before and has yet to come. We are important and central to God’s plan.
- They encourage us to recognise that we can’t do everything on our own but we can ask and receive.
As long as the day lasts I must carry out the work of the one who sent me; the night will soon be here when no one can work. As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31, 32
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
Mark 8:35, 36
And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.
But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.
Mark 10:43, 44
Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life.
And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.”
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Matthew 6:19-21, 24
